Goodnight landfill will soon close

Murray River Council

Murray River Council has announced the upcoming closure of the Goodnight waste facility, which has been earmarked for closure since adoption of the Waste Management Strategy in 2019.

The facility, currently managed by Cleanaway under contract with the Council, will cease operations on October 4, 2023.

Cleanaway's contract with Council will conclude on this date, with no further renewals planned for the site's operation.

Council's Manager of Waste and Compliance, Brian Holmes said the decision to close the facility is based on several factors, including its limited utilisation and economic considerations.

"The Goodnight waste facility, open for only three hours each Sunday, has declined in usage over the last few years. In fact, the usage statistics show that we are averaging less than one customer per opening."

"This limited customer base, combined with economic challenges such as staffing, processing costs, and site management, renders the facility operationally unsustainable."

Whilst the Goodnight facility may be closing, Council aims to provide more efficient and cost-effective waste management services for residents in central locations.

"The Koraleigh facility, strategically situated to cater to surrounding areas, will offer waste disposal solutions for Goodnight, Tooleybuc, Mallan, Speewa, Dilpurra, and Murray Downs," Mr Holmes said.

"We will continue to build on the service offerings at the Koraleigh location to ensure residents can access various waste disposal functions."

The last day of operations at the Goodnight Landfill site will be Sunday October 1.

Following the facility's closure, the site will undergo rehabilitation as part of Council's 10-year capital plan.
