The Government is seeking feedback on proposals to future-proof and grow the organic sector by ensuring we have a strong and modern regulatory framework, Associate Agriculture Minister Mike Butterick says.
"New Zealand's wider organic sector is worth $1.18 billion, with exports of more than $606 million fuelled by global demand for premium and sustainably produced products," Mr Butterick says.
"We want to build on that strong foundation and maximise opportunities for regional communities.
"Consultation launched today seeks further feedback on key steps for organic regulations. These include a national organic mark, an exemption threshold for the sector, infringement notices, and minor and technical amendments to existing regulations.
"We want to hear from people across the organic and export sector on these proposals. It's vital that we get the system right so we can support continued growth for organics in New Zealand."
The Organic Products and Production Act 2023 is designed to increase consumer confidence, provide certainty for businesses, and support international trade. Regulations are in place and organic standards close to completion.
Mr Butterick says the Ministry for Primary Industries has worked with the organic sector every step of the way throughout the process, with the latest consultation part of that ongoing dialogue."
