Grant For Hurstbridge Solar And Backup Power

Hurstbridge Community Hub

Council has secured a $265,000 grant from AusNet Services to enhance the Hurstbridge Community Hub with additional solar power and a 99kWh battery – a welcome investment in energy resilience for the region.

The funding will enable key services at the Hub, including the Maternal and Child Health Centre, childcare, community lounge, kitchen, and meeting rooms, to operate seamlessly during power outages. The upgrade will also help reduce electricity costs and lower the Hub's environmental footprint.

This initiative aligns with Council's Climate Action Plan 2022-2032 to develop resilience to climate change events and support our commitment to achieving our target of net-zero emissions by 2030. Council is contributing $24,000 to the project.

Mayor John Dumaresq said the improvements would provide much-needed energy security for local residents.

"The Hub serves as a vital community resource – a place where people can cool down on a hot day, work remotely, or attend regular classes and activities," Cr Dumaresq said.

"This investment strengthens the Hub's role as a welcoming and reliable space for our residents, even during disruptions to electricity supplies," Cr Dumaresq said.

Deputy Mayor and Bunjil Ward Councillor Naomi Joiner acknowledged AusNet's commitment to improving community energy resilience.

"We are grateful to AusNet for acknowledging the critical role that energy infrastructure plays in strengthening our local communities. This investment is fantastic news for Hurstbridge and its neighbouring suburbs, as it promises to enhance connectivity and support for the community in the future," Cr Joiner said.

The $265,000 grant, which is part of AusNet's $2.4 million Energy Resilience Community Fund Major Grants, will fund:

  • An expanded solar PV system
  • A 99kWh battery
  • A new switchboard
  • A new back-up generator

Nillumbik was one of 13 councils and community groups to receive funding in this highly competitive grant round, which supports councils across Melbourne's east and regional Victoria through to the NSW border.

The hybrid solar and battery back-up power system installation with public EV charge station (not part of grant funding) is expected to be completed by January 2026.
