Grants Boost WA Farmers' Markets, Celebrate Local Produce

  • Eleven recipients to share in $469,000 worth of Farmers' Market grants
  • Australia's first farmers market grant scheme supporting WA growers, small businesses, tourism and jobs
  • Cook Government continuing to invest in more inclusive communities to foster a vibrant and creative economy

The Cook Government is investing in Western Australia's fresh local WA produce with funding to develop and enhance thriving farmers markets.

Eleven successful applicants will share in $469,000 from the Farmers' Market Grant Scheme, an Australian first initiative to support business sustainability, operational performance and growth.

Grant recipients include eight existing farmers' markets and three prospective operations from across Perth, the Mid West, Wheatbelt, South West and Peel regions.

The funds will be used to purchase infrastructure, aid compliance, pursue marketing and communications campaigns, and progress development plans.

Applicants will also be able to use funds for business planning, food safety training, market development and one-off projects that build financial sustainability.

Farmers' markets are valuable community and tourism hubs, where growers, value add businesses and artisans can showcase local products and produce, connect with consumers directly and foster a vibrant and creative economy.

As stated by Agriculture and Food Minister Jackie Jarvis:

"The Farmers' Market Grant Scheme is the first in Australia to support these important community hubs, which not only celebrate fresh WA produce and agrifoods but also connect local businesses and providers with communities and support local tourism.

"This funding will assist farmers' markets in building capability and ensuring a sustainable business model for future success.

"I encourage all Western Australians to check out their local farmers' market, support local businesses and source some great local fresh produce."
