Council has endorsed a revised concept for the Hutt Street revitalisation project. The option will deliver a safer and greener street while ensuring only a minimal reduction in car parking.
The City of Adelaide is committed to delivering a project that will benefit the community and support precinct activation and economic development.
The design reflects what people have told Council matters most. This includes keeping Hutt Street's village feel, improving amenity through the delivery of upgraded footpaths and lighting, making it safer for pedestrians and cyclists, and providing additional greening whilst maintaining convenient parking options to help support local businesses.
Construction dates will be finalised in 2026; however, the City of Adelaide is committed to:
- Carrying out works incrementally, in stages, to minimise disruption.
- Comprehensive engagement with stakeholders and the local community before the project starts with a view to understanding day to day business operations and how these can be accommodated during the construction delivery as far as practicable.
- Ongoing interaction with local businesses and residents throughout the life of the project and provision of timely information to ensure businesses and residents are kept up to date with what's coming next.
Lord Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith said the project will provide a well-planned street that is welcoming, accessible and comfortable.
"The option we have settled on for Hutt Street ensures it is equitable for all users whether they ride, work or drive," said the Lord Mayor.
"It has been somewhat of a journey to arrive here, but the reality is that with essential works due on
Hutt Street, now is our opportunity to integrate renewal needs with the broader streetscape upgrade.
"Our track record on recent projects like Market Square, Eighty Eight O'Connell and Charles Street demonstrates that we can carefully manage disruption to residents, businesses and all city users."
The next steps are for the Administration to seek to finalise grant funding arrangements, inform the community and stakeholders of Council's direction and provide information on next steps associated with the detailed design phase.
Design consultants will be procured to commence detailed design, and the Administration will commence engagement with stakeholders to inform detailed design and delivery planning. To avoid disruption prior to Christmas next year, construction is anticipated to begin in early 2027.
