Greens Demand Govt Stops Growing Homelessness

Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand

The Green Party is calling on the Government to reverse its changes to emergency housing access as homelessness grows alongside public pressure.

"Christopher Luxon has intentionally increased homelessness. With the crisis filling our streets, he must choose to stop growing the problem," says Green Party co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick.

"Today, we have launched a petition calling on the Government to stop homelessness spiralling out of control, amplifying the demand in our communities for immediate, urgent, political action.

"Rough sleeping is up 89% in Auckland, 24% in Wellington and 73% in Christchurch. Homelessness is increasing in every part of the country. That didn't just magically happen. It is the consequence of intentional political decisions.

"If Christopher Luxon refuses to face the evidence his own officials are giving him, he can take up my multiple invitations to visit Auckland Central and meet the people he has made homeless.

"It's time for the Government to do its job: ensure all New Zealanders live in safe, warm, dry homes," says Chlöe Swarbrick.
