Grog running - Arnhem Land

Northern Territory Police in Jabiru seized a vehicle and the equivalent of 270 standard drinks in an alleged grog running incident late last week.

Police apprehended a vehicle travelling east on the Arnhem Highway and located a large quantity of beer and spirits in the boot of the car. This included 60 cans of beer and eight bottles of whiskey.

The driver of the vehicle disclosed the alcohol was destined for a remote prescribed community, and that the intended recipient was subject to a Banned Drinker Order.

The 51-year-old driver was instructed to proceed to the Jabiru Police Station, where 28 litres of liquor was seized and destroyed, and the man's vehicle was also seized.

The man has been issued with a Notice to Appear for bringing liquor into an Alcohol Protected Area.

Acting Officer in Charge Jabiru Police Station, Bradley Gaylard said, "Police will continue to target the illegal supply of alcohol to our vulnerable communities as it is recognised as the main driver behind domestic violence and antisocial behaviour."
