Growing friendships and gardening skills at Lucas

Want to grow your gardening skills with other green thumbs?

The community is invited to embrace all things gardening at the official launch of the new Lucas Community Garden on Thursday 12 March at 12.30pm.

The garden, located next to the Lucas Community Hub, was first developed in November 2019 and has already blossomed into a thriving garden with a group of enthusiastic community members eager to share their love of edible gardening with others.

The Lucas Community Garden provides the opportunity for people to participate and learn about growing food, raises awareness around food security and provides the opportunity to develop local social connections.

There are no individual plots. All produce is grown to share with the local community.

The group has weekly gardening sessions from 10-11am on Thursdays. Find the group on Facebook via the Lucas Community Garden page.

The initiative was funded through the City of Ballarat's Engaging Communities Program. The Engaging Communities Program works with communities to develop projects that will enhance their local area, strengthen community connectedness, build neighbourhood pride and empower the community.

The City of Ballarat held engagement activities in 2019 to identify local projects and received feedback from more than 140 participants. Eight community members nominated to become part of a Lucas Community Representative Group to action local priorities, including holding community events and the creation of a community garden.
