The Guarantee of Origin (GO) Scheme is now live.
The GO Scheme is a voluntary certification framework that tracks the emissions intensity of products - like hydrogen - and verifies renewable electricity generation and consumption.
A key part of Australia's architecture to reach net zero, the scheme supports the Australian Government's Future Made in Australia plan to encourage investment in low-carbon products and renewable electricity. This will enable organisations to credibly claim the use of green electricity in their operations.
The scheme has 2 parts: the Product Guarantee of Origin (PGO) and the Renewable Electricity Guarantee of Origin (REGO).
The PGO will show where a product has come from, how it was made, and the emissions intensity throughout its lifecycle. Initially, it will certify hydrogen from electrolysis and will expand to a range of products including low carbon liquid fuels, green metals, and biomethane.
The REGO will certify renewable electricity and provide an enduring mechanism beyond the Renewable Energy Target (RET) and large-scale generation certificates (LGCs) which expires in 2030. In addition, the REGO will allow for certification of electricity not currently included in the RET, for example electricity dispatched from storage or electricity generated below-baseline.
