Malvern police are investigating after a hammer was thrown at a car in a road rage incident in Malvern East earlier this month.
Investigators have been told a 40-year-old woman was driving with her 74-year-old mother on Tooronga Road about 12pm.
The pair were preparing to turn right onto Wattletree Road in their BMW SUV when they were cut off by a black Volkswagen Tiguan.
The victim tooted her horn and the Volkswagen abruptly stopped in the middle of the road.
An unknown man exited from the passenger side of the Volkswagen and threw a hammer into the windscreen of the victim's car.
He returned to the Volkswagen which sped off along Wattletree Road.
The offender was perceived to be of middle-eastern appearance, aged between 30-40 years' old, about 178cm tall and was wearing all black clothing.
The victim's car windscreen was significantly damaged but fortunately no one was physically injured in the incident.
Checks have revealed the Volkswagen was bearing cloned number plates.
Investigators are releasing an image of the offending vehicle, which was taken at the scene, in the hope someone may be able to assist police in identifying its occupants.
