Harvey stands in way of rapid response to alleged corruption

  • In 2012, the WA taxpayer funded a detailed inquiry into the Housing Authority for the former Liberal National Government
  • Liza Harvey has refused to allow the McGowan Government to access this report to assist in a rapid response to the issues identified by the CCC
  • WA Liberal Party play the role of obstructionists as the McGowan Government seeks to deal with issues of alleged corruption
  • Treasurer Ben Wyatt has called on Opposition Leader Liza Harvey to work with the Government to ensure a rapid and thorough response to the issues surrounding the Housing Authority.

The decision by the WA Liberals to refuse to hand over a 2012 report on the Housing Department shows they prioritise their own secrecy over the interests of the taxpayers of Western Australia, who paid for the report.

By refusing to hand over the report the Opposition have chosen not to play a constructive role in the rapid response the McGowan Government is leading in order to deal with the structural failings which have become apparent.

As stated by Treasurer Ben Wyatt:

"Ms Harvey has been demanding inquiries and reviews into Government but when it comes to the first opportunity she has to provide a taxpayer-funded review by her own Government into the Housing Authority, she refuses.

"One must wonder what is in the report given the Liberal Party remain so desperate for its contents to remain hidden from the public after seven years.

"After providing a running commentary of the issue, Liza Harvey has missed her chance to play a constructive role in dealing with the structural issues which have been uncovered.

"By choosing to instead protect her own Government's record of inaction and ineptitude, she has exposed herself of being unable to constructively work with Government and resolve these issues.

"The Liberal National Government failed to detect any of this behaviour during their eight years in office and are now doing all they can to make a rapid and thorough response all the harder.

"Ms Harvey clearly has some questions to answer about the contents of that report and why she does not want the public of Western Australia to see it."
