Have your say on improvements to Yerrabi pond

Local Gungahlin residents and the wider Canberra community are invited to have their say on improvements to enhance Yerrabi Pond.

Minister for Transport and City Services Chris Steel said the ACT Government would deliver improvements to the popular recreation spot following an Assembly motion moved and passed by Labor MLA Michael Pettersson.

"Yerrabi Pond opened in 1999 and has changed a lot since then with additions including playground facilities, more walking and cycling paths and a skateboard area," Minister Steel said.

"Most recently, a new nature play space was opened last year featuring a central climbable turtle, percussion instruments, sandpit, balancing equipment and natural log and boulder steppers.

"However we recognise just how popular this recreation area is and we want the community to provide feedback on how they use the space and what outcomes they would like to see from improvements in the area.

"Once delivered these improvements will deliver on another 2020 ACT Labor election commitment and I encourage the community to have their say on proposed improvements."

Labor MLA Michael Pettersson said that he was pleased to see his motion passed through the Assembly and welcomed the Government living up to its promises by delivering community infrastructure for the growing Gungahlin community.

"I look forward to speaking with members of the community about exactly what improvements they would like to see, particularly around Yerrabi District Park and Yerrabi Pond park, but I'm also open to looking at improving other areas following consultation," Mr Pettersson said.

"Consultation will be open until 4 June on the YourSay website where people can complete a survey or find out about one of the pop-up sessions that will be held at Yerrabi Pond District Park in coming weeks."

Mr Pettersson also said that he was a big supporter of the Friends of Yerrabi Pond group and thanked the Government for working to facilitate the creation of this important community group.

"Residents of the ACT love being able to get outdoors and enjoy urban parks and recreational spaces like Yerrabi Pond and I'm pleased to see the Government is fostering this group," Mr Pettersson said.

"Support from volunteers is important in helping us achieve the outcomes that the community wants and this group will provide a hands‑on way to contribute to the conservation, presentation, and maintenance of Yerrabi pond."
