Have your say on Tasmania's Container Refund Scheme

Roger Jaensch,Minister for the Environment

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is committed to having a Container Refund Scheme start operation in 2022 as part of our goal to have the lowest rate of litter in the country.

We are serious about reducing litter and increasing resource recovery and recycling.

The introduction of a Container Refund Scheme is an important action in Tasmania's draft Waste Action Plan and we know there has already been a high level of interest from Tasmanians in the Scheme.

We are committed to delivering the best scheme for Tasmanians, bringing together the beverage industry and the waste and recycling sectors.

Today, on World Environment Day, we are inviting Tasmanians to have their say on the key design features of the Scheme.

The draft legislation that will establish Tasmania's Container Refund Scheme is available today and the public consultation period has now opened.

Tasmanians have until 9 July 2021 to send in a written submission or fill out the online survey.

The Tasmanian Government is committed to implementing a scheme that will be convenient for the community, good for the environment and maximises the number of containers returned. It will see people receive a 10 cent refund for returning eligible drink containers to designated Refund Points around the state.

Webinars for the general public and stakeholders to learn more about the Scheme are also on offer. Register your interest to attend at www.dpipwe.tas.gov.au/CRS
