Hazard Reduction operation to west of Jindabyne in Kosciuszko National Park

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is planning a hazard reduction operation to the west of Jindabyne, in Kosciuszko National Park, commencing on Friday 18 February 2022, weather permitting.

'The 987-hectare treatment is at China Creek to the west of Jindabyne and to the south of the Alpine Way,' said Tristan Ricketson, Snowy River Area Manager at National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).

"With the above-average rain experienced over the spring and most of summer, NPWS is looking to continue its hazard reduction program earlier than usual. Creeks and gullies are still damp and the weather forecast for later this week is favourable to get these burns completed," Mr Ricketson said.

'This strategic operation is part of a proposed 20-treatment program by NPWS in the southern ranges,' he said.

'Our activities in China Creek will help to limit the potential spread of wildfire to surrounding private properties and to protect park assets from fire impacts.

'The treatment will commence Friday afternoon and residents and visitors are reminded to drive to conditions and observe any warning signs or directions from fire crews. Warning signs will be in place along the Alpine Way.

'Smoke from the treatment may be visible near Jindabyne and Thredbo for a number of days.

'We thank our neighbours for their understanding.

'People with asthma or who are susceptible to respiratory problems are advised to keep clear of the area or stay indoors.'

These activities are part of the many hazard reduction operations undertaken by NPWS across New South Wales each year, many with the assistance of the NSW Rural Fire Service.

This hazard reduction treatment is part of the NSW Government's $76 million package over 6 years to boost bushfire preparedness and double hazard reduction in the State's national parks, where conditions allow.
