Screen Queensland today announced that production has wrapped on the action-horror feature Headless, a contemporary reimagining of the Headless Horseman mythology.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaking duo The Spierig Brothers (Daybreakers) and produced by Queenslanders Chris Brown (Beast of War) and Diana Le Dean (Sting), Headless brings together local creatives, crew and post-production companies from across the state's screen industry.
Filmed on the Gold Coast, the screenplay is co-written by Queensland-based writer Shayne Armstrong, Shane Krause (The Contents) and Noel O'Riordan (Somebody's Daughter). The production also includes emerging talent Damian Lang as Associate Producer, supporting the next generation of homegrown filmmakers.
The project showcases Queensland's end-to-end production capability, from development and filming through to post, digital and visual effects, engaging leading screen businesses including Formation Effects and The Post Lounge.
Starring Australia's Mel Jarnson (Mortal Kombat, Killer Whale) and Ryan Corr (In Limbo, Packed to the Rafters, Underbelly), Headless follows a rudderless hitchhiker and a driven woman seeking vengeance for her family's murder as they attempt to stop a motorcycle-riding, semi-immortal ghoul that feeds off carnage on remote desert highways.
Minister for the Arts John-Paul Langbroek said the Gold Coast continues to be the powerhouse of screen production in Queensland.
"Headless is another example of the incredible pipeline of work being created right here in Queensland.
"Supported through Screen Queensland's Screen Finance and Development funds, Headless is expected to inject approximately $8.3 million into the Queensland economy while employing 125 local cast, crew and creatives."
Screen Queensland CEO Jacqui Feeney said the production reflects the strength and maturity of the state's screen sector.
"Headless highlights Queensland's complete screen ecosystem, engaging local production through to post-production while leveraging the talents of our highly skilled workforce.
"We are proud to support distinctive Queensland stories. Series such as Fortitude Valley, Black Snow and Two Years Later, alongside feature films including Posthumous and Seven Snipers and You, Always, continue the legacy of homegrown storytelling Queensland is known for."
Headless joins a bold slate of productions currently filming in Queensland, including Black Snow (Season Three), Gundam and Honeymoon with Harry."
