For thousands of generations, the Butchulla people have cared for the islands and waters of the Great Sandy Strait in Queensland.
A partnership between the Butchulla Native Title Aboriginal Corporation (BNTAC) and Burnett Mary Regional Group (BMRG) is helping restore 10 islands across the strait.
The Great Sandy Strait 10 Islands Project brings together Butchulla knowledge and science to care for Country.
The project includes:
- cultural heritage monitoring
- ecological surveys
- pest animal and weed control
- traditional cool burning.
It is also helping Butchulla people reconnect with Country and share knowledge between generations.
The short film Healing Butchulla Country - Land, Sea, Sky was produced by Human Terrain. It follows Butchulla people as they restore and care for Country across the Great Sandy Strait.
The Great Sandy Strait is home to forests, mangroves and coastal heath.
Its waters and islands provide habitat for:
- dugongs
- turtles
- migratory birds.
The area also supports important fish nurseries and other native wildlife.
The project is funded through the Australian Government's Natural Heritage Trust. It is delivered by BMRG, a member of the Commonwealth Regional Delivery Partners panel.
The Natural Heritage Trust supports on-ground action to protect and restore Australia's environment.
