Health crisis worsens as Liberals push on with stadium

Tasmanian Labor

Tasmania's health crisis continues to worsen as the Liberal government prioritises a $750 million stadium over the real issues facing Tasmanians.

Last night, the Launceston General Hospital, which already had the worst bed block in the country, again had to tell the community not to attend its emergency department unless they had a life-threatening condition.

Meanwhile, the major redevelopment of the LGH promised by the Liberals at the last election is still a decade away.

As if that wasn't bad enough, it was revealed this morning that one of the two linear accelerators at the North West Regional Hospital will be shut down at the end of this week because of a lack of staff.

This is critical, lifesaving cancer treatment equipment and it is simply not good enough that patients in the North West are expected to travel to Launceston or Hobart to access it.

As the Federal Liberal Member for Braddon said last month "travelling to Launceston or Hobart for treatment is a significant barrier for many people and they shouldn't be expected to do it".

Tasmanians want a government that has its priorities right - and that means addressing the growing crisis in our health system, not recklessly spending millions of taxpayer dollars on a stadium in Hobart.
