Healthy Sunshine Coast community yoga launched at Nambour

A new partnership between Yoga NRG and Mindfulness Training Australia, Sunshine Coast surfer charity The Board Meeting and council's Healthy Sunshine Coast program will provide free community yoga classes at Nambour to support families with children living with a disability.

Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said new classes were constantly being added to council's popular Healthy Sunshine Coast program.

"Since the launch of our health and wellbeing initiative in 2016 more than 20,000 people have taken up the opportunity to join in one of the many free or low cost classes delivered across the Coast by accredited trainers such as Yoga NRG," Cr McKay said.

"I'm proud to announce new community yoga classes delivered by Yoga NRG will be held twice a week at Nambour on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9.30am.

"With the popularity of the program growing it is really making a difference by aiming to be Australia's most sustainable region – healthy, smart, creative."

The Board Meeting chairman Mark Skinner said the charity was often looking for partnerships with local service providers to offer support and vital services to the region's many families in need.

"We have teamed up Yoga NRG to deliver free yoga under council's Healthy Sunshine Coast program, to families registered with our organisation who are supporting children with special needs, ," he said.

"I would like to thank our partners for their support – Sunshine Coast Council by providing the venue and Yoga NRG for opening these classes up to the broader public at a low cost of $5."

Yoga NRG and Mindfulness Training Australia director Tammy Williams said they were proud to be involved in this important initiative given the inspirational evidence that mindfulness-based yoga not only gets people moving, it empowers people.

"The qualities that are cultivated on the yoga mat not only improve our physicality but our mentality," Ms Williams said.

"It's a great way for the community to receive subsidised yoga by high quality Yoga NRG teachers who are passionate about their community health and development.

"The profits will be put back into the program so the classes can continue at low cost for the broader community and for free to families registered with The Board Meeting.

"Our yoga classes foster community connection, social inclusion while providing a healthy life."
