Hear Our Call For Disaster Help

Farmers are urging the state and federal governments to deliver Category D disaster relief for NSW regions hit hard by recent floods as fresh storms threaten the state.

NSW Farmers' Dairy Committee Chair Mal Holm said more than a month on from the latest disaster, many farmers remained without adequate support to rebuild from a string of flood and severe weather events.

"In the hardest hit regions, we've seen farms completely levelled and decimation on a scale that hasn't been seen in our lifetimes," Mr Holm said.

"To date, over $107 million in damages to the agricultural industry have been reported to the government following these disasters, and we know that's just the start of the devastation that has been wreaked.

"Support to get severely affected farmers back on their feet just isn't up to scratch, and we feel like no matter how many hundreds rally for our cause, we've been left out alone in the elements as yet another potential disaster looms."

With more wild weather forecast for the east coast, Mr Holm called on governments to increase disaster grants for severely flood affected NSW primary and aquaculture producers from $25,000 to $75,000 before any further damage was sustained.

"This is the bare minimum these farmers need to keep producing the food and fibre that feeds the world, and yet, they've left with support that's no more than a drop in the ocean compared to the damage," Mr Holm said.

"We need to see fair financial support to get farmers back on their feet, like we've seen delivered in disasters of a similar scale.

"The government's hung these farm communities out to dry - but the problem is, the water only keeps rising."
