Heat Hits SE Inland, Storms Sweep North

BOM
G'day from the Bureau with your National Weather Forecast around the country for Wednesday, the 28th of January.

And we're seeing that extreme heat continue through inland parts of New South Wales, northern Victoria and also northern parts of South Australia as well, and even into southern and western Queensland.

Further north, we're seeing widespread rain and thunderstorms across our tropical north, with isolated heavy falls there. We're also seeing the remnants of ex-tropical cyclone bringing rain and storms to eastern parts of WA as well.

While it is cooler in Tasmania and southern Victoria, and also through coastal South Australia and parts of WA as well.

So let's have a look at all of that in more detail.

Firstly, in Queensland.

We can see that widespread rain and thunderstorm activity across our tropical north. And we do have many Flood Warnings current across much of northern and western parts of Queensland, and they're likely to continue for much of the week.

Staying dry and partly cloudy across much of eastern and southern Queensland. Very hot though through inland parts of Queensland, as you can see there. Temperatures up into the low to mid forties, but much cooler in the north, while south-east Queensland enjoying a nice and mild day, 31 °C with lots of sunshine in Brisbane.

Moving down into New South Wales.

We're seeing that extreme heat continuing right across inland New South Wales, with temperatures in the mid to high forties, and some locations could break their January records and possibly all-time records through parts of western New South Wales, so we're watching that closely.

Thankfully, the coastal areas of New South Wales, sea breezes will save you, with the heat only staying on and west of the ranges. So it's only going to be 29 °C with lots of sunshine and afternoon sea breezes in Sydney, but a very hot 42 °C in Canberra with lots of sunshine.

Heatwave Warnings continue for much of inland New South Wales as well on Wednesday.

Dropping down into Victoria, and it's a tale of two stories across the state.

So through southern parts of the state, we're going to see temperatures in the low twenties. That's about 20 °C cooler than what we saw on Tuesday, where we saw mid forties there.

But north of the ranges that heat will continue, with temperatures in the low to mid forties up along the Murray River, and a little bit cooler south of there. Staying dry though across much of the state.

Very windy for our coastal areas, but dry and partly cloudy conditions elsewhere. Melbourne a much cooler 24 °C and partly cloudy skies.

Moving down into Tasmania, and much cooler down there as well, particularly through western and southern parts of the state where we're seeing those cooler conditions there. Hobart partly cloudy, 25 °C.

But notice that heat lingering through northern parts of Tasmania, 33 °C and partly cloudy in Launceston.

Jumping up into South Australia, and similar to Victoria. Much cooler day for our coastal areas of South Australia thanks to some southerly winds. Only 24 °C in Mount Gambier.

But that extreme heat continues across much of northern South Australia, with temperatures once again getting up into the high forties. 46 °C, 47 °C and 48 °C all possible.

A dry and breezy day in the south. Dry and very hot in the north. Adelaide a warm, sunny 33 °C.

Over in WA, we're going to see widespread rain and storms across much of eastern and south-eastern WA on Wednesday, thanks to the remnants of that tropical low that will ease as we move during the day. Very cool conditions and very wet through locations there.

Further westward though, we're going to see warm, dry and sunny weather, cooler than what we're seeing through the northern areas, only 30 °C and sunshine in Perth on Wednesday. But we see warm and sunny conditions across northern parts of the Pilbara.

And then finally across our tropical north.

You can see widespread rain and storms across northern Queensland, the Gulf, the Top End and even over into the Kimberley on Wednesday, with afternoon rain and storms likely.

Pretty hot through southern parts of NT with temperatures in the low to mid forties. Cool, wet and humid, well cool for this time of year, wet and humid across that tropical north with temperatures in the low thirties, with lots of rain and thunderstorms.

Darwin showers and thunderstorms and 31 °C.

So with the heatwave in the south and the rain and storms in the north, make sure you get the latest forecasts and warnings for your area via our website and app, and we'll continue to keep you updated here at the Bureau.
