Help select the OptiKA People's Choice Award

Kingston Arts' popular photographic competition OptiKA is now in its 13th year, and we would like to invite the community to view the entries to help us to select this Year's People's Choice Award.

In 2020, photographers and video-makers were invited to enter Kingston's OptiKA Awards, and the winning entries are now on display at DFO Moorabbin until the beginning of April.

Kingston Mayor Steve Staikos said that judges had a tough time selecting the winners from a talented pool of entrants, but we still need the help of the community to select the winner for the final prize category: The People's Choice Award.

"The OptiKA 2020 exhibition at DFO Moorabbin presents over 100 works of art which were created in response to the timely theme of 'Connection'," said Cr Staikos. "The exhibition provides an emotive and diverse snapshot of the Kingston community during the COVID 19 pandemic, which saw artists capture everything from well-known settings to intimate domestic scenes."

"Many of the entries were created during a period of lockdown in Melbourne and we commend the Kingston community for their creativity and resilience during this challenging time."

In 2020 over $6000 in prize money was awarded to our well-deserving finalists. Including:

  • Mark Forbes, who won $4,000 for the Best Photograph Award (sponsored by DFO Moorabbin)
  • Amelia Jewell, who won $1,000 for the Portrait Award (sponsored by DFO Moorabbin) and
  • Emily Gough, an under 18 entrant who won $500 for the Video Award (sponsored by the City of Kingston)

The final prize, yet to be awarded is the People's Choice Award worth $1000 - sponsored by DFO Moorabbin.

"You can vote on site or online for your favourite entry in the 'People's Choice Award' and go in the running to win a $250 DFO voucher. Voting closes on Monday 12 April and winners will be announced on Monday 26 April," said Cr Staikos.
