Territorians with lived experience of disability are being encouraged to help shape a more inclusive Northern Territory, with Expressions of Interest now open for the Northern Territory Disability Advisory Committee.
The Committee provides independent advice to the Minister for Disability on issues impacting people with disability and supports work across government to improve accessibility, inclusion and participation.
Chief Executive Officer of the Department of People, Sport and Culture, Samantha Livesley said the Committee played an important role in ensuring the voices of people with disability are heard in government decision-making.
"We want to hear from people with lived experience who want to help shape government decision-making through the Northern Territory Disability Advisory Committee," Ms Livesley said.
"Members bring valuable perspectives and lived experience that help improve inclusion, accessibility and outcomes for Territorians with disability."
People with disability, carers, and people from regional and remote communities and diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Chair of the Northern Territory Disability Advisory Committee, Sarah Skopellos, said joining the Committee was an opportunity to make a meaningful difference.
"As Chair of the Northern Territory Disability Advisory Committee, I encourage you to apply to join the Committee and help drive progress on rights, access, inclusion and equality across the Northern Territory," Ms Skopellos said.
"This is a meaningful opportunity to challenge barriers, influence policy and help shape an inclusive Territory for people with disability."
"Come and join our wonderful team of NT disability leaders."
The Committee was established on 3 December 2019, the International Day of People with Disability, and provides independent advice on issues of importance to people with disability in the Northern Territory.
The Committee also helps raise awareness of the rights of people with disability and the shared role government and the community play in supporting inclusion and meeting obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
Committee members meet three times each year and are appointed for a two-year term, with the option of reappointment for up to four years in total.
