Surf Coast Shire Council is calling for community members with a passion for the environment, climate action and community connection to volunteer as facilitators for The Adaptation Game (TAG).
TAG is an interactive storytelling experience, played through a board game, that brings conversations about climate change and disaster preparedness close to home, and helps communities connect, learn and build resilience to climate change.
Part board game, part storytelling experience, TAG encourages people to share their experiences, hear different perspectives and better understand how communities can support each other before, during and after a climate emergency.
Councillor Phoebe Crockett said the events of last summer highlighted the importance of preparing for future climate emergency.
"TAG is a safe, engaging and enjoyable way for people to explore how we can support ourselves, our neighbours and our wider community during a climate emergency," she said.
"We're looking for people who enjoy connecting with others, and can guide thoughtful conversations where everyone feels heard, respected and included.
"You don't need previous facilitation experience, just an interest in helping your community build resilience, a willingness to learn or just love board games."
Council is seeking volunteers who:
- Have an interest in the environment and climate issues and a passion for community.
- Can facilitate respectful conversations and navigate sensitive topics with empathy.
- Love board games, workshop facilitation, storytelling, connection with and contributing to the community.
Successful volunteers will receive training and ongoing support to lead small community TAG sessions with support from council staff.
"Climate change affects everyone differently and TAG provides a welcoming space for people to explore what the future can look like for our community," she said.
"Our volunteer facilitators will help lead these important conversations, strengthen community connections and support people to build resilience together."
This initiative supports the Climate and Environment Leadership direction in the 2025-2029 Council Plan, which commits Council to preparing communities ahead of emergencies, strengthening resilience and leading local action on climate adaptation.
