Kiama Municipal Council and students from West Wollongong TAFE are transforming everyday infrastructure into a vibrant outdoor gallery, with photographic works now on display across bin shelters in Terralong Street in Kiama's town centre.

Created by students undertaking the Certificate IV in Photography and Digital Imaging, the series showcases a mix of portraiture and Kiama's iconic landscapes and landmarks.

The result is a collection of visual stories that celebrate people and place, inviting the community to experience art in unexpected ways.

Featured students include Jade Davis, Jes O'Hare, Brad Marks, Trish Phillips and Artie Kennedy-Whiting, whose works reflect technical skill and creative interpretation of the Kiama region.

Acting Kiama Mayor Melissa Matters was pleased to see the photographic art was a wonderful innovation for the town centre.

"These students are certainly talented," Councillor Matters said.

"We don't normally think of bins as lovely to look at but these ones now are."

TAFE NSW Wollongong West Campus photography teacher Andy Zakelj said the project offered a unique and rewarding opportunity for students to share their work with a wide audience.

"It was great to collaborate with Kiama Council and showcase the talents of photography students from TAFE," he said.

"While it sounds funny to have the photos on bins, it's actually a great way to get exposure for the photographers involved, as the bins are used every day - and in a beautiful place like Kiama that sees lots of visitors. It's a win-win for the bins."

This initiative highlights the value of creative partnerships and demonstrates how public spaces can be reimagined to support emerging artists and enhance the local cultural landscape.

Next time you're walking down Terralong Street, take a moment to pause - you might just discover a hidden gallery.
