History buffs would be aware of the famous Battle of Marathon between Persians and the city of Greece, but how many would know of the historic township in Flinders Shire also named Marathon?
Natural Resources Minister Dr Anthony Lynham is proposing to realign the locality boundaries of Stamford and Dutton River to recognise this historic township by creating the new locality of Marathon.
"Creating this new locality will resolve issues with postal delivery and improve emergency service responses in the region," Dr Lynham said.
"The name also aims to connect the community with the historical significance of the region."
While it certainly isn't the site of a famous Greek battle, the historic township located about 65 km west of Hughenden is no slouch when it comes to historical significance.
In 1903 the famous Great Northern railway line reached the township of Marathon, with the rail line – now called the Mount Isa line – still passing through the historic township as it transports minerals from Mount Isa mines to the port of Townsville.
Marathon was also a pastoral property name first used by lessees in 1863 at the suggestion of Mr William Lempriere Frederick Sheaffe, the then Commissioner of Crown Lands for Kennedy District.
But before the new locality of Marathon can cement its place in the history books, it is up to the community to make their voices heard through consultation.
"Community consultation is essential in any decision-making process and I encourage all interested persons or groups to take part," Dr Lynham said.
"This is a chance for everyone to have their voices heard."
