The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has achieved a record high in the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), rising five places to 62 globally. This marks the fifth consecutive year HKU has set a new benchmark in this ranking. HKU also retains its position as the top university in Hong Kong.

The ARWU, released annually by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, evaluates over 2,500 universities worldwide and publishes the top 1,000 results. Since 2003, it has been ranking the world's top universities annually, using a methodology that incorporates six indicators including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, the number of Highly Cited Researchers selected by Clarivate™, the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index from the Web of Science, and per capita performance of a university.
