HKU Holds Flag-Raising Ceremony to Commemorate the 29th Anniversary of the Establishment of the HKSAR

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) held a flag-raising ceremony today (July 1) to mark the 29th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of the People's Republic of China. The ceremony was attended by Acting President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Richard Wong, members of the Council and Senate, as well as staff, students, and invited guests.

Since its founding in 1911, HKU has remained steadfast in its historic mission to serve as the English-speaking university for China. Built upon a bedrock of academic excellence, the University champions pioneering research that drives societal progress both locally and globally. This academic prowess is consistently reflected in global league tables; in the latest QS World University Rankings 2027, HKU retained its historic high of 11th place globally for the second consecutive year, solidifying its position among the world's elite institutions. Over its illustrious 115-year history, the University has been a premier magnet for top-tier talent, recently welcoming several world-renowned, Nobel Laureate-level scholars to its academic community.

With the nation's "15th Five-Year Plan" on the horizon and the HKSAR initiating public consultations on its first Five-Year Plan, HKU will continue to play a leading role in driving academic excellence, research innovation, and interdisciplinary talent development. The University actively supports and aligns with the development of the Northern Metropolis University Town and key government policy initiatives. By leveraging the University's unparalleled strengths in foundational research and technological innovation, HKU remains dedicated to facilitating Hong Kong's integration into national development, shaping a brighter future for the region, the nation, and the world.
