The Council of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) noted at a meeting today (28 July) that Professor Zhang Xiang has decided to leave office as President & Vice-Chancellor of HKU upon completion of his current term on 14 July 2028. The Council of HKU will handle the recruitment for the next President & Vice-Chancellor in accordance with the authority conferred on it by the HKU Ordinance (Cap. 1053), and will launch a global search process.
Dr. Peter Wong Tung-shun, Chairman of the Council of HKU, respected Professor Zhang's decision and thanked him for his contributions to the University throughout the years. "Universities must actively strive for breakthroughs in the face of society's ever-changing needs. Both Professor Zhang and I understand that it is time for HKU to embrace fresh ideas and be guided by a new leader in undergoing upcoming transformation", he said, "I sincerely thank Professor Zhang for his many years of dedication to raising the university's academic standing. I look forward to HKU's continued development, and its ongoing contributions to building Hong Kong into an international education hub, a global innovation and technology centre, and a hub for attracting top international talent".
Professor Zhang assumed office as the 16th President & Vice-Chancellor of HKU on 15 July 2018. During his tenure, he vigorously promoted the University's development in scientific research and innovation, and leveraged Hong Kong's unique advantages both regionally and internationally. He also strategically recruited world-class academic talents. Under his charge, HKU's world university ranking has risen steadily, jumping from 26th place in 2018 to 11th place in 2026—an historic high. HKU also rose to first place among Asian universities, cementing its leading position in the region.
