Today marks the opening of the newly upgraded Hobart Airport ensuring it remains the gateway for travel, tourism and trade opportunities for Tasmania.
The $130 million investment has seen upgrades to the runway, taxiways and enabling facilities.
The delivery of this critical Albanese Government election commitment will enable direct access to Asia with the Airport able to service larger passenger and freight planes such as the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350.
Hobart Airport's upgrades also mean that it will continue to be Australia's Antarctic gateway and the Australian Defence Force can continue vital air operations from the Airport.
Over 190 jobs were created during construction, with a further 1,261 indirect jobs set to be supported across Tasmania thanks to the upgraded runway's operations.
The $130 million project was jointly funded, with $60 million from the Albanese Government and $70 million from delivery partner Hobart Airport.
Quotes attributable to Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King:
"These upgrades help connect Hobart to the world. The newly reopened Hobart Airport will create opportunities for Tasmanians, from local businesses and tourism operators, to strengthening Tassie's connection to the Antarctic sector.
"This investment has secured Hobart's status as Australia's Antarctic gateway, and will help grow economic activity from the Antarctic and Southern Ocean sectors.
"Sporting an upgraded runway, Hobart Airport can now take on larger international passenger and freight flights, unlocking a world of opportunities for Tasmanians and the local visitor economy.
Quotes attributable to Federal Member for Franklin Julie Collins:
"We have seen passenger numbers continue to grow at Hobart Airport and this upgrade will pave the way for more growth. This upgrade is a critical enabler for future tourism, trade, and travel right here in Tassie.
"It will also enable opportunities for direct exports between Hobart and Asia, meaning Tassie farmers and producers can get goods to destinations faster, in better quality, and at a higher premium.
"This is yet another example of the Albanese Labor Government delivering on its election commitments to Tasmania and the electorate of Franklin."
