Household net worth statistics give a picture of the net worth (wealth) of New Zealanders, by looking at their household assets - financial and non-financial - and their liabilities.
Definitions and metadata
Household net worth statistics: Year ended June 2024 - DataInfo+ provides the survey's background, methodology, data quality, and definitions of terms used.
Household net worth statistics: Year ended June 2024 uses data from the Household Economic Survey (HES): Year ended June 2024. While HES is run every year, it collects additional data on individual and household assets, liabilities, and net worth every three years.
The target population for HES is the usually resident population of New Zealand living in private dwellings, aged 15 years and over. This population does not include, for example, overseas visitors, people living in non-private dwellings such as hotels/motels and halls of residence, and patients in hospitals.
About the release
This is the last year of the Household Economic Survey in its current form. Household net worth statistics will be produced using the Household Income and Living Survey going forward.
Data updates to previously published statistics
We've republished the Excel tables and CSV for Household net worth statistics: Year ended June 2021 after discovering an issue with how couples were identified in the dataset, which meant joint assets and liabilities weren't correctly assigned.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
