Housing Approvals Continue To Surge In South Australia

SA Gov

The Malinauskas Labor Government's policies to boost housing supply has resulted in a surge in building approvals.

According to ABS Building Approvals data released this week, approvals for all dwellings in the year to February 2026 reached 14,863 new homes approved in South Australia.

This is a 10.4% increase when comparing the year to February 2026 with the year prior, a boost from 13,467 approvals to 14,863 approvals.

There was also a month-to-month bump in approvals, with a total of 1,306 homes for South Australians approved in February 2026, a 12.3% increase compared with January 2026.

South Australia continues to outperform the nation in building approvals, with our increases higher than the national year-on-year increase of 8.6%.

The increase in home approvals follows bold planning reforms within the Premier's Housing Roadmap to make building homes more efficient.

These reforms streamlined the code amendment and land division process allowing more homes to be built for South Australians, faster.

With housing approvals rising, the Malinauskas Government turns its focus to rapidly converting these approvals into new homes to meet its annual target of 13,500 completions.

This target will be achieved by supercharging current efforts through the Housing Roadmap with the significant suite of election commitments designed to build more homes for South Australians.

At the same time, the Malinauskas Government will continue collaborating with developers and builders across the state improve housing approvals, site commencements and completions.

As put by Peter Malinauskas

We are getting on with the job of building more homes for South Australians.

South Australia continues to outpace the nation in housing growth, but we know that approvals are just one part of the equation – the real test is turning them into keys in the door.

That is exactly what our election platform to build more homes for South Australians will deliver.

As put by Nick Champion

Every home approved could represent a first home buyer in the suburbs, a family looking to upsize, or a regional worker who just needs a place to live.

Nearly 15,000 approvals in a year is a strong pipeline, but our job now is to convert every one of those into a finished home for these South Australians.

These numbers don't happen by accident. They're the result of deliberate planning reforms that cut red tape and get shovels in the ground.
