How Research Is Shaping Future Of Australian Cotton

CRDC

Behind every Australian cotton crop is research, development and extension (RD&E) steadily solving the practical challenges growers face on farm and helping them become more profitable and sustainable.

CRDC exists to deliver that RD&E, and cotton growers are at the heart of what we do - they determine our RD&E priorities and co-fund our research through a grower levy, matched by Commonwealth contributions.

From improving water use efficiency and managing pests, weeds and diseases, our investments fuwith research partners are tackling the challenges that matter.

Some of our key projects include:

  • The Australian Cotton Disease Collaboration (the ACDC), which is working to reduce the economic cost of disease to less than five per cent of the cost of production.

  • The Future Cotton project, a major partnership with the Qld Department of Primary Industries to grow productivity through RD&E.

  • The Novel Energy and Evaporative Storage Technologies for Irrigators' (NEESTI) project, an Australian-first research initiative installing floating solar panels on irrigation dams to mitigate evaporation and generating energy.

These RD&E projects are guided by CRDC's 2023-28 Strategic Plan, Clever Cotton, and by grower feedback, ensuring our investments are focused on the challenges growers are facing in the paddock and across their businesses.
