Hume City Council residents now have the ability to recycle on the go, with Victoria's Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic) trialling bin baskets across Hume City.
The bin basket trial has been rolled out in partnership with CDS Vic, with specially designed baskets attached to a number of public litter bins across the Hume community. Eligible drink containers can be left in the bins and then collected by anyone who would like to return them for a 10-cent refund at Container Deposit Scheme sites.
Throughout the trial, metal baskets will be attached to public bins across our city, helping keep eligible containers out of landfill while supporting community members to collect the refund.
The baskets will be placed in areas with high foot-traffic, clearly labelled and positioned alongside existing bins. The baskets are designed to:
reduce litter in public places
have more eligible containers be recycled at refund points
reduce contamination in public recycling bins
lower collection and maintenance costs
reduce bin rummaging and damage to bins
Bin baskets have been successfully rolled out as a trial in Yarra Ranges, City of Port Phillip and Mornington Peninsula Shire, supporting local fundraising, assisting residents facing cost-of-living pressures, and significantly reducing recyclable containers ending up in landfill.
Hume City Council Mayor Cr Carly Moore said this program positively builds on the already successful container return program in Hume.
"The Container Deposit Scheme is already very successful popular in Hume City," Mayor Carly Moore said.
"These baskets will help more people benefit from the program, delivering extra refunds for residents while ensuring more containers are diverted from landfill."
Matt Davis, CEO of scheme coordinator VicReturn, said that while 3 billion drink containers have been returned through CDS Vic since the scheme's launch in November 2023, the bin baskets will help capture more containers in public spaces, which has been challenging.
"When you're out and about, look for a CDS Vic bin basket. Leave your eligible containers for someone else or take them with you to return at your nearest refund point," Mr Davis said.
"Just remember that only eligible CDS Vic drink containers belong in the basket, so look for the 10-cent mark on your empty drink can, bottle, or carton."
