Georges River Council is excited to share that the Hurstville War Memorial Cenotaph is being restored. This project was partially funded by the NSW Office for Veterans Affairs' Community War Memorials Fund and is managed by Council.
Located on Forest Road in Hurstville, the restoration works have begun. They are expected to be completed by the end of the month, just in time for Remembrance Day.
The project will focus on:
-
Re-gilding the inscriptions to restore their visibility and honour the names etched in history.
-
Repointing aged and missing mortar to strengthen the structure.
-
Steam cleaning to remove biological growth and built-up dirt.
-
Refreshed garden landscaping.
Mayor Elise Borg said, "This memorial is a place of reflection and respect. We're committed to preserving its dignity for future generations.
"The restoration ensures that the stories and sacrifices of our servicemen and women remain visible and honoured."
Council thanks the NSW Government for supporting this important project with the Community War Memorials Fund.
