Iconic Walk Plan Advances

Tasmania's Next Iconic Walk has moved another exciting step closer.

The Public Works Committee approved the project to go ahead, highlighting the importance of multi-day walks in Tasmania.

Minister for Parks, Nick Duigan, said this is a good decision for Tasmania, with the Next Iconic Walk to offer more experiences of our unique environment, and deliver on the things that matter to Tasmanians like economic growth.

"This project offers Tasmanians and visitors a fresh opportunity to experience the outstanding natural values and history and will bring significant economic and social benefits to the West Coast and Tasmania," Minister Duigan said.
"Following Federal environmental approval earlier this month, this is another significant milestone that means we can move on to finalising approvals, including the development application with the West Coast Council.
"Our Government is delivering this $40 million walk to enhance Tasmania's reputation as one of the great walking destinations in Australia and the world.

"Demand for Tasmania's multi-day walks, Three Capes Track and the Overland Track, continues with consistently high bookings and return visitors.

"This decision confirms what I have been saying for some time - this walk will be iconic, it will attract visitors to the state and encourage them to stay longer, bringing jobs and economic benefits to Tasmania."
The Next Iconic Walk is estimated to create 139 jobs during construction and 40 ongoing jobs.

"The walk will deliver ongoing benefits to the West Coast economy, opening more tourism, hospitality and business opportunities," Minister Duigan said.

"A positive benefit cost ratio of 12.71 is expected for the West Coast.
"The Public Works Committee approval, which considered a number of public submissions, proves the project is well considered, fiscally responsible and a good use of public funds."
Subject to all approvals and permits being obtained the walk is on track for completion in 2029.
The proposed three-day, two-night walk will be developed between Lake Plimsoll and Lake Margaret Power Station.
