Illaroo Road Rehabilitation Works Progressing Well

More than 3.3 km of Illaroo Road in Bangalee has been undergoing a full rehabilitation since May, with betterment works making the road more resilient to future natural disasters.

The road was damaged by the severe flood events in 2022, with work being carried out thanks to joint funding by the Australian and NSW governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements through the Infrastructure Betterment Fund.

Mayor Patricia White said pavement reconstruction was underway, which would result in a durable, safe and smooth road surface for the community to drive on.

"This is a busy stretch of road used by locals to travel between Nowra and the villages of Cambewarra, Tapitallee and beyond," Cr White said.

"It's been a major undertaking to get this road repaired and welcome news to see the bitumen go down after many months of preparation. This has included excavation, drainage works, powerline works, watermain relocation, and the replacement of pipe culverts," she said.

"Despite a lot of rain since the project began, the majority of work should be done by Christmas, with some minor works extending into January. The community has been very patient and I sincerely thank them for their support over the past few months."

With the bitumen sealing of the second section of the works (from Hockeys Lane to east of Bingarra Lane) completed, upcoming construction includes:

  • Table drain excavation (the creation of channels running parallel to the road to divert rainwater)
  • Cement stabilised pavement construction and bitumen sealing to create a strong, durable road pavement from Bingarra Lane to 115m east of Tapitallee Road.
  • Asphalt wearing course (the top layer of road) at the intersections of Karana Drive Moondara Drive, Hockeys Lane, Bingarra Lane, Gypsy Point Road and Koloona Drive.
  • Line-marking.
