ILO, PNG Partners Host Workshop to Boost Labour Governance

The International Labour Organization (ILO), in collaboration with the Government of Papua New Guinea and social partners, convened a planning and consultation workshop on improving labour governance in Papua New Guinea on 28 April 2026 at the Grand Papua Hotel in Port Moresby.

The workshop brought together representatives from the Department of Labour and Industrial Relations (DLIR), the Employers Federation of Papua New Guinea (EFPNG), the Papua New Guinea Trade Union Congress (PNGTUC), and other relevant government agencies. The consultations reflected a shared commitment to tripartite collaboration in advancing labour reforms and strengthening governance frameworks to improve working conditions.

In his welcome remarks, DLIR Secretary George Taunakekei emphasized the alignment of the Improving Labour Governance project with national priorities. "The Improving Labour Governance project aligns with government policies and departmental priorities, advancing labour law reforms and employment standards," he said. He reaffirmed the Department's commitment to working closely with the ILO to promote safe, healthy and well-governed workplaces.

Mr. Taunakekei also noted the significance of the workshop coinciding with the World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2026. "Safe and healthy working environments are a fundamental principle and right at work," he stated.

Opening remarks were delivered by the DLIR Secretary alongside representatives from EFPNG and PNGTUC, who reiterated their collective commitment to strengthening labour administration systems and promoting decent work in Papua New Guinea.

PNGTUC General Secretary Clemence Kanau highlighted the importance of reliable labour market data for informed policymaking. "There is a critical need for reliable and up-to-date labour force data to inform labour law reviews and implementation," he said. He further stressed that "the planned Labour Force Survey is essential to ensure evidence-based labour law and policy reform."

Participants provided inputs on the project's priorities, proposed interventions and implementation strategies. Discussions underscored the importance of evidence-based policymaking and strengthened partnerships among stakeholders.

The Improving Labour Governance in Papua New Guinea programme, supported by the Australian Government, aims to enhance labour market governance and administration through strengthened legal frameworks, improved labour market information systems, and effective social dialogue mechanisms.
