Images released after A-League derby pitch invasion

North West Metro Regional Crime Squad detectives area appealing for public assistance following a mass pitch invasion during last night's A-League derby match at AAMI Park.

More than 150 football fans ran onto the field shortly about 8pm after a significant number of flares were ignited and thrown through the crowd.

Three men were injured during the incident, with a Melbourne City goalkeeper being taken to hospital with a head injury.

The goalie was struck to the head after a man threw a metal bucket full of sand at him, which also struck a match official.

Investigators have released images of a man who may be able to assist with their enquiries in relation to this incident.

The third victim was a cameraman who was struck to the back of the head with a flare resulting in a contusion and burnt clothing.

Detectives have released an image of a man who may be able to assist investigators with their enquiries.

A dedicated group of detectives are investigating the incidents as part of Operation Astute, which was launched today.

Investigators have also released a number of images of men they believe might be able to assist with their enquiries into several other incidents that occurred including ripping of flares, assaults, criminal damage and invading the field of play.

Police are continuing to trawl through vision of the incidents to identity those involved.

Investigators from Operation Astute are also working with Football Australia, A-League officials and the clubs.

Anyone who witnessed the incidents, with information or phone vision is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or log onto www.crimestoppersvic.com.auExternal Link.

Quotes attributable to North-West Metro Region Specialist Operations Acting Superintendent Jason Goddard.

"What we saw last night from those who chose to invade the pitch was shocking, disgraceful and lacked total respect for the game of football.

I'm a lover of the game and I actually feel sad about what I saw play out on the pitch last night.

Along with thousands of supporters, Victoria Police condemn the behaviour.

I was at the game and I've watched the vision of what happened a number of times and see the behaviour as disgusting.

Detectives from our North West Metro Regional Crime Squad are working hard and I have no doubt we'll be knocking on a few doors soon."
