Increased Fire Risk For WA, NSW & Victoria This Summer

Department of Home Affairs

Australians in Western Australia, New South Wales and Victoria are encouraged to prepare for an increased risk of fire this summer.

The Seasonal Bushfire Outlook for summer 2025-26, released today by the Australian and New Zealand Council for fire and emergency services (AFAC), provides information to assist fire authorities to make strategic resource and planning decisions prior to the fire season.

For the summer outlook period, increased fire risk has been identified for the Yalgoo, Geraldton Sandplains, Swan Coastal Plain, Jarrah Forest, Esperance Plains and Mallee areas in Western Australia.

There is potential for above normal fire danger in parts of central northern NSW this summer due to high grass fuel loads and areas of forest entering summer dry.

The summer climate outlook is not suggesting a clear indication of above or below normal rainfall but is providing a confident forecast of higher-than-normal temperatures, particularly in central and western NSW.

An increased risk of fire is forecast for the south-west and western Victoria, as well as north-central, east central and south-west Gippsland.

While other parts of Australia show normal risk of fire during this period, communities are encouraged to remain vigilant and alert.

Dangerous and deadly fires can still occur during average and below-average seasons.

The Government, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), is preparing and stands ready to support states, territories and communities impacted by natural hazards this summer.

Minister for Emergency Management Kristy McBain said it's vital that communities remain vigilant.

"Approaching summer, a lot of Australians have started preparing their holiday plans, but it's important that they have emergency plans included in their checklist," Minister McBain said.

"Take the time to prepare your homes for the types of hazards you could face, and ensure you're ready to act, should a disaster strike.

"The Albanese Government will continue working closely with all levels of government, prioritising the safety of Australians this high risk weather season."

Chief Executive Officer of the Australian and New Zealand Council for fire and emergency services said no matter where you live or travel this summer, everyone can play an important role by being prepared and staying alert to warnings and advice.

"Your local fire and emergency agencies are the perfect place to find out exactly how to stay safe this season," Mr Webb said.
