Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne

Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne has welcomed today's announcement that the Minns Government is modernising and rewriting the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act. The planning system in NSW is broken and this is a central cause of the housing crisis affecting Sydney and NSW.

Mayor Byrne said, "Almost half a century since the Act was originally drafted, it has become far too complex and riddled with red tape which is strangling housing supply in Sydney.

"Every week, we are seeing young people, renters and essential workers being forced out of the Inner West and Sydney because they simply cannot find a home to live in. Simplifying and modernising our State's planning legislation is the single most important thing that must be done if we are to stop the exodus of young people from our city."
