A $4.3 million works package for the Bruce Highway at Innisfail is now complete.
The upgrade includes a new signalised right turn at the Innisfail - Japoon Road intersection plus pathways and lighting along River Avenue and a bike-wheeling ramp at the Centenary Bridge.
The works build on the $6 million Ash, Pine and Blackwood streets intersection upgrade finished earlier this year.
Deputy Prime Minister and Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the upgrades formed part of the Australian and Queensland governments' $12.6 billion Bruce Highway Upgrade Program.
"These works deliver a safer Bruce Highway for businesses, residents and motorists in Innisfail," Mr McCormack said.
"They also include the installation of traffic lights and upgraded pedestrian facilities at the Innisfail Road Japoon Road intersection to help school children and other pedestrians cross the highway safely."
Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said it made sense to deliver the bikeway project on the Bruce Highway and Centenary Bridge at the same time as the Innisfail - Japoon Road intersection upgrade, minimising disruptions and supporting jobs.
"It's part of the Queensland Government's $20 million package for upgrades and new roads in the Cassowary Coast region," Mr Bailey said.
"A pedestrian refuge, additional pathways and lighting were also installed on the section locally known as River Avenue, near Hadrell Park, as part of the bikeway works."
Senator for Queensland Susan McDonald said investing in projects that provide a safe pathway encourages people to be more active and swap their car trip for a bike ride or a walk.
"By providing a safe environment for pedestrians and cyclists, it not only reduces the number of cars on the road, but also delivers important health benefits," Ms McDonald said.
"It is important that we plan for and deliver infrastructure projects that will build a sustainable, high quality multi-modal transport network."
