Wing Commander Richard Korner didn't start his career in the skies - he began with rocks. After studying geology, a downturn in the industry prompted him to explore new horizons.
In 2001, at age 22, he joined the Air Force as a logistician. Almost 25 years later and Wing Commander Korner is now shaping the next generation as an Air Force liaison officer (AFLO) with the Australian Air Force Cadets (AAFC).
As the AFLO for 1 Wing, Wing Commander Korner plays a critical role in supporting more than 500 cadets across North Queensland, from Mackay in the south, to Mount Isa in the west and Mareeba in the north.
"If you like talking to people and want to be part of an organisation that helps to develop our Australian youth, then this is a great place to be," Wing Commander Korner said.
"The cadets are always so excited to see and do things they wouldn't normally do in their day-to-day lives, like our flying program where they can get their Civil Aviation Safety Authority licence for drones under 7kg.
"Cadets also learn skills in leadership and development. I've seen a lot come through who are now in the Air Force, which is fantastic."
'The opportunity to help develop the youth of Australia through the Air Force Cadets program is a real privilege.'
AFLOs are the bridge between the Air Force and the AAFC, helping to deliver one of Australia's most respected youth development programs.
The AAFC welcomes cadets from all backgrounds, and AFLOs reflect that same diversity. Whether you've come from a technical trade, logistics, aviation, or another field, what matters most is your passion for youth development and community engagement.
"The ability not to be chained behind a desk [means] I get out and meet a lot of people, and [I] really enjoy that," Wing Commander Korner said.
"The opportunity to help develop the youth of Australia through the Air Force Cadets program is a real privilege."
AFLOs are more than just facilitators - they're mentors, role models and leaders. They help cadets experience teamwork, belonging and leadership in a safe and inclusive environment. It's a role that offers new adventures, new skills and friendships for life.
If you're ready to take flight on a new adventure and help shape the future of Australia's youth, consider applying for an AFLO position.
