The installation of a beach enclosure at Bathers Beach has begun.
The bespoke barrier, which runs approximately 340m between the breakwaters and sits about 125m offshore, creates a unique experience for beachgoers to swim in a protected area right in the centre of Fremantle.
All the parts of the barrier, including anchor points, mesh panels and floating buoys are being deployed from vessels, meaning there is no impact to the beach during the two-to-three-week installation period.
The barrier will remain in place until April, when it will be stored for the off-season.
The installation was delayed due to the outcome of an underwater heritage assessment in September which required some design changes and final approval from state government departments.
The barrier is made of semi-rigid braided mesh with internal stainless steel and is designed not to trap or harm marine life.
Designed by Safer Swimming Australia, located in O'Connor, it is being installed by Henderson-based company Franmarine Underwater Services.
The enclosure was made possible by a $500,000 contribution from the WA Government as part of its comprehensive shark hazard mitigation strategy.
For safer swimming this summer, people should check the SharkSmart WA app before hitting the water.
