Integrity Commission paper raises serious questions

Tasmanian Labor

Tasmanian Labor acknowledges and welcomes the release today of the first paper in the Integrity Commission's Ethical Conduct and Potential Misconduct Risks in Tasmanian Parliamentary Elections Research Paper Series.

Shadow Attorney-General Ella Haddad said the paper focussed on offences contained in Tasmania's Electoral Act as well as campaign conduct.

"This Paper Series is crucial to exposing serious issues in our electoral system and will provide vital information to ensure elections in Tasmania are open, fair and transparent," Ms Haddad said.

"Integrity in the electoral process is crucial to democracy, and this paper raises some very significant issues the Parliament must take seriously.

"Elections should be fair and fought on a level playing field. It is clear that there is a lot of work needed to ensure that the community can have confidence in Tasmania's electoral processes.

"Labor believes the Parliament's Joint Standing Committee on Integrity could conduct an inquiry to consider how the options for reform set out in the Integrity Commission's paper could be implemented in Tasmania.

"Labor also calls on the government to quickly progress the Electoral Reform Bills that have previously been released, as this would address some of the issues identified in the paper.

"The government must also act to progress all of the recommendations of the review of the Tasmanian Electoral Act that was released in February of this year."
