Tasmanian pharmacists will be able to dispense most prescriptions issued by interstate practitioners from later this month, when the Poisons Amendment (Interstate Prescriptions) Act 2025 will commence.
This includes psychostimulants commonly used to treat ADHD, opioids, medicinal cannabis, and benzodiazepines, improving access for Tasmanians who have been prescribed these medicines.
The new rules will come into effect on 16 February 2026.
Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, said the commencement of the new legislation means Tasmanians will now find it easier to access medicines prescribed interstate.
"Our Government is delivering on our plan to improve access to healthcare for Tasmanians with commonsense solutions," Minister Archer said.
"Tasmanians who access medical care interstate and are prescribed certain medications will now be able to have them dispensed in Tasmania, regardless of where their doctor is based."
The reforms will also benefit visitors to Tasmania. Travellers from interstate who bring valid prescriptions with them will be able to have these dispensed by local pharmacists.
Information about the upcoming changes is available on the Department of Health website for all members of the public, including detailed information targeted to prescribers and pharmacists.
