Investigation continues into Coburg death

Homicide Squad detectives believe they are getting closer to solving the brutal murder of an elderly man in his Coburg home last year.

Kon Kritikos was home alone at his Reynard Street property when he was located by a family member just before 11pm on 11 November.

The 87-year-old had been seriously assaulted.

He was subsequently conveyed to hospital, where he passed away on 24 November.

Detectives spoke to a 57-year-old Coburg man and a 45-year-old Kurunjang woman who were at the property when police arrived on the night.

Both people were known to the victim.

However the pair was released pending further enquiries and no one has been charged in relation to the matter.

Homicide Squad detectives are today renewing their appeal for information and are urging anyone who may have seen anything at the property or has knowledge of the incident to come forward.

Investigators are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have seen a female at the address during the day.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

Quotes attributable to Detective Inspector Tim Day:

"Let me be clear from the outset - this is a matter that Homicide Squad detectives not only believe we can solve, but that we will solve.

This was an incredibly violent attack on one of the most vulnerable members of our community.

Kon was located at 11pm, however detectives have been able to narrow down the time of his assault and are in possession of evidence to suggest that this occurred earlier in the day, between 3.30pm and 5.30pm.

Witnesses have told police and provided detectives with details about a female who was seen at the property earlier that day. At this stage, we believe it is likely to be the same woman who police spoke to on the night and she remains a clear suspect in this investigation.

Members of the community, friends, associates of Kon would have spoken of this horrific incident. They would have perhaps been provided with a version of events by a person close to Kon - particularly a female close to Kon or his family.

We need anyone who has had a conversation with any person about Kon's death, where a version of events has been provided, to contact Crime Stoppers.

Whilst I don't for a moment think Kon's killer will have the courage or dignity to finally come forward to provide the family some comfort as to what happened to Kon and the reasons for his death, I'd like to be surprised."
