Investigation continues into north and eastern suburb explosions

Detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding a series of explosions in the north and eastern suburbs earlier this month.

It is alleged eight devices were detonated on 4 July between 7 and 9.45pm in suburbs including Northcote, Ivanhoe, Heidelberg Heights, Kew and Kew East.

No injuries were reported to police; however, a vehicle was significantly damaged, and a number of rubbish bins and letterboxes were destroyed by the blasts.

A 30-year-old Bellfield man and a 27-year-old Bundoora man were arrested and charged by investigators from the Arson and Explosives Squad on Thursday 15 July.

Despite the arrests, investigators believe a number of other parties were involved in the incidents and are appealing to the public to assist in identifying them.

It is also believed a number of images and videos were circulated on social media following the incidents and detective are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen or have copies of the content.

Anyone who witnessed the incidents, or who may have seen social posts regarding the incidents online is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

Both men were charged with eight counts each of cause explosion likely to endanger life, reckless conduct endanger life, and reckless conduct endanger person.

They have been remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court for committal mention on 7 October 2021.
