Investing In Territory Safety For Long-term

NT Government

The Territory Labor Government is securing the future of the Territory Safety Division and ensuring it has the equipment needed to lower crime and reduce anti-social behaviour through by investing $16 million each year to deliver police and vehicles where they are needed most.

The Territory Safety Division is a high-visibility policing unit that focuses on public order, anti-social behaviour and youth crime - its members are out on Territory streets keeping the community safe.

As part of this ongoing investment, the Territory Safety Division will be funded to ensure there will be 52 police positions in the unit every year and an extra 26 police vehicles.

The permanent establishment of the Territory Safety Division is an important part of the Territory Labor Government's common sense and comprehensive plan to lower crime across the Territory.

The Territory Safety Division will be permanently based out of the Nightcliff Police Station and will be able to offer a surge response to other areas such as Katherine and Alice Springs to offer support to police on the ground who are managing high workloads.

The extra police to be included in the Territory Safety Division will also allow for more joint agency operations targeting anti-social behaviour and issues around misuse of grog.

The Northern Territory Police Force is working to have the Territory Safety Division fully staffed by mid this year. Police recruitment will also be ramped up to fill both Territory Safety Division vacancies and frontline roles.
