The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Amazon are partnering to deliver critical support to communities affected by the devastating floods that struck central Nepal in August.
The contribution will support government-led efforts to respond to widespread humanitarian needs following the disaster. As of 2 September, over 1,200 people are confirmed to have lost their lives and over 4,200 remain missing, while preliminary estimates show that more than 84,000 people have been affected. Damage to homes, roads, health facilities, and other critical infrastructure continues to hinder relief efforts.
"The scale of this disaster has left many families grieving, displaced, and uncertain about what comes next," said Helene Fors, IOM Chief of Mission in Nepal. "Amazon's support comes at a critical moment, allowing us to provide assistance where it is most needed. We are grateful for Amazon's partnership and solidarity with the people of Nepal as communities begin the difficult process of recovery."
Amazon's flexible contribution will support IOM's response efforts, including activating the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), delivering mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) services, and engaging communities on safe migration practices, the risks of human trafficking, and other protection concerns.
Reliable data is essential for effective humanitarian action. Through DTM, IOM will support authorities and humanitarian partners to identify affected and displaced populations, monitor displacement trends, and assess priority needs. These insights will help inform response planning and enable humanitarian partners to better prioritize assistance for communities most in need. The floods have also taken a significant psychological toll on affected communities. IOM's MHPSS activities will help provide vital support to individuals and families coping with loss, vulnerability, and uncertainty in the aftermath of the floods.
Amazon is also providing an in-kind donation of winterization kits, thermal blankets and solar lights with phone chargers to help address urgent shelter and relief needs among displaced households as winter approaches.
This contribution builds on the longstanding partnership between IOM and Amazon in responding to humanitarian crises around the world. Together, the organizations have delivered life-saving shelter and relief assistance during emergencies in Türkiye, Syria, Mexico, Jamaica, and, most recently, Venezuela and Colombia, among others.
