Japan and South Korea reach agreement, Canada welcomes

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement welcoming an announcement between Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK) in addressing a longstanding historical issue and strengthening their ties:

"Japan and ROK are close friends of Canada and are strategic partners in the Indo-Pacific region. Canada welcomes the recent announcement between the two countries, which marks an important step forward in building a safer and more prosperous future for the peoples of Korea and Japan.

"As we mark this important milestone, we reiterate our commitment to continue strengthening ties with Japan and ROK and advancing our shared vision towards a free, open and secure Indo-Pacific. We look forward to building on this important friendship in the years to come."
